As the number of proposed uses of Ils increases there is a proportional increase in concern for the environmental impact of these designer salts. If widespread use of Ils is to be promoted then it is critical to understand their biological impact. To this end we are studying the effects of Ils on the growth and viability of specific bacteria, fungi and protists. In addition, using an in vitro assay, we are looking at the effect of Ils on seed germinatiion and plant growth. These studies are currently being undertaken in collaboration with Sharon Lall-Ramnarine of Queensborough Community College. |
